MANCHESTER - School superintendents in districts spent Sunday afternoon communicating with staff and parents, stressing the importance of helping children feel safe at school today, the first full day of classes following Friday's mass shooting in Newtown, Conn.

Two days after a gunman slaughtered 28 people in Newtown, including 20 children killed inside the Sandy Hook Elementary School, thoughts of school safety and how to talk kids about the tragedy were foremost on the agenda for the state's top educators.
